Huge monster of a beast., October 28, 2011 By This review is from: Swingline Optima Electric Pencil Sharpener, Fits Six Different Pencil Sizes (29968) (Office Product) Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program ( What's this?) I tested this model alongside a regular x-acto dealie. Even though both sharpened reasonably well, I found myself repeatedly reaching for the swingline brand (this one), because of various reasons:
1) SPEED. A pencil is sharpened in 3 seconds. Not 3 - 5 seconds. 3 seconds.
2) Sturdiness. This sucker is huge bottomed, and doesn't wobble, shake, or vibrate. It's not going anywhere. The puny pencils will get eaten.
3) Sound. It's not noisy. It makes noise, but compared to every other pencil sharpener I've used (electric, that is), this one's quiet.
There is one minor annoyance. Sometimes, the pencil hole becomes slightly misaligned, and it makes it a little more annoying to put the pencil in, but it happens so infrequently, and so slightly that I'm willing to let that one annoyance slide by the wayside.
By the by: when you empty the shavings trap, slide the trapdoor, don't lift it. It took a little fiddling to make that obvious for me.

It's OK, September 30, 2011 By M. Mitchell (USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?) This review is from: Swingline Optima Electric Pencil Sharpener, Fits Six Different Pencil Sizes (29968) (Office Product) I'm a homeschooler who needs a good pencil sharpener. I had the X-Acto Powerhouse Electric Pencil Sharpener for about 5 years and when it broke I wanted to get something with a bigger shavings receptacle. I chose this for that and because it claims to be less messy and had a pencil holder on the back. It's ok. It sharpened pencils nicely (though not as much of an angle as I would have liked) and didn't take very long to do it.
1) The motor seems solid, but weak. It stalled out pretty easily with little pressure.
2) The pencil holder is a joke. It holds 4 pencils, 6 if you have them half sticking out. It's also at the back of a large unit. Most people are going to have this tucked to the back of their desk, out of the way, where it won't be convenient to grab pencils from anyway. Don't buy it for this feature.
3) The shavings receptacle is not as large as it appears. Picture a line about a third from the bottom. That's it. That whole cover pops off, but... Read more

Love this for my Prismacolor Soft and Verithin Pencils, December 28, 2011 By Tina "adkhkr" (Lyon Mtn, NY) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?) This review is from: Swingline Optima Electric Pencil Sharpener, Fits Six Different Pencil Sizes (29968) (Office Product) I know this was not made for colored pencils but it works great. I normally used cheap ones since the colored pencils do eventually ruin them but caught this one in a lightning deal for under twenty bucks and snagged it up. It is the BEST sharpener I have ever used for my pencils. It even sharpens the verithins that my other sharpeners just chewed up.
Things I love about it:
A beautiful sharp point in seconds. You have to remember to sharpen a graphite pencil every dozen sharpens or so to keep it clean from the colored pencils.
Does not chew up the pencil, when I insert a new pencil to sharpen, it comes out the same length. It is important not to push on the pencil as this will cause it to just keep eating away and you'll be left with a stub, just hold it loosely letting it rotate in your hand. The motor does not stop running when it's completed with the sharpening but you'll notice the chewing sound stops and that is when you need to extract the... Read more
